Sarah Newell is a criminal defense attorney in Lincoln, Nebraska, with more than two decades of experience representing clients in complex criminal matters throughout the state. A graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the University of Nebraska College of Law, she began her legal career clerking for the Nebraska Supreme Court before serving as a deputy public defender and later with the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy. Throughout her career, Newell has handled thousands of criminal cases, including numerous homicide and death penalty matters, and has experience handling cases in jurisdictions across the state, including Nebraska federal courts.
She is recognized for her commitment to protecting constitutional rights and ensuring access to justice. Newell is an Adjunct Professor in Trial Advocacy at the University of Nebraska College of Law and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. She chairs the Nebraska State Bar Association House of Delegates Committee. She has held leadership positions with the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorneys Association and the Robert Van Pelt Inns of Court in addition to the Nebraska State Bar Association.
Sarah's diverse experience in both public and private practice, as well as within the judiciary, legislature, and academia give her a unique perspective. She believes strongly that the criminal justice system only works if both sides are equally matched. Too often the State’s resources dwarf those of the citizen accused—making every trial look more like David versus Goliath. Sarah has devoted her career to leveling the playing field for clients, advocating for justice like a Valkyrie warrior.
